New Graduate Commons Program

The exciting new Graduate Commons Program, recently approved and funded by President Drew Faust, is coming to 5 Cowperthwaite and 10 Akron Streets this August.  Created in collaboration with the graduate and professional schools, the program provides a housing experience that balances the needs for privacy and convenience with opportunities for cross-discipline collaboration and social interaction outside of the classroom, fostering a greater sense of community for our graduate student population.

Residents will be able to participate in a rich program of social and intellectual activities.  Examples include specialty cooking nights, movie and sports events nights, intellectual and cultural events, outings, and more.

* If the Graduate Commons experience appeals to you, we encourage you to choose 10 Akron Street or 5 Cowperthwaite Street as your housing!  Click here to apply.

*Please note there are more applicants than available units so housing is not guaranteed

5 Cowperthwaite Street and One Western Avenue Awarded LEED Gold Certification

Our 5 Cowperthwaite Street complex, completed in 2007, has just been awarded a LEED Gold Certification, and our One Western Avenue complex, completed in 2005, has been awarded a LEED Silver Certification. LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a program run by the U.S. Green Building Council.

LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. Parking of Portable Moving Containers

HRES and University Parking Services have received numerous requests by incoming residents to park portable moving containers in parking spaces for several days. Because on-site parking is very limited, we often are not able to accommodate these requests and can only give residents 20 minutes to unload and move their vehicles. We therefore urge residents to consider not using these containers, if possible.

We also want to remind you that parking on-campus and Cambridge, Boston, and Somerville streets is limited and in all cases temporary/visitor and resident permits must be obtained in advance of your move. For further information, please contact the appropriate office below:

Harvard University Parking Services - 617-495-3772 - http://www.uos.harvard.edu/transportation/par_vis.shtml

Cambridge Traffic and Parking Department - 617-349-4721 - http://www.cambridgema.gov/traffic/MovingVanPermit.cfm

Somerville Traffic and Parking - 617-625-7900 - http://www.ci.somerville.ma.us/section.cfm?org=Traffic&page=349

Office of the Boston Transportation Department – 617-635-4682 (Resident Parking) or 617-635-4680 (Street Occupancy Permits) - http://www.cityofboston.gov/transportation/default.asp. Note: Street occupancy permits are issued only to licensed, registered moving companies that are bonded with the City of Boston Public Works Department (617-635-4909).

No Pets Allowed

HRES would like to remind our housing applicants and tenants that no pets of any kind are permitted in Affiliated Housing and that HRES will strictly enforce this policy. Please keep this policy in mind when making your housing decision.
